Although Flinders and George Bass (just a few years older) both grew up in Lincolnshire they did not meet until 1795 on Reliance.
HMS Reliance on patrol
Bass was the surgeon and was everything Flinders wanted to be. He was a physically imposing man of six feet (183 cm), unlike Flinders who was half a foot shorter with a slight build. Bass was a man of action who travelled to Australia with exploration in mind. He was intellectual and travelled with a substantial library of books, reflecting wide interests. He spoke a number of European languages as well as Latin.
