The surgeon on Reliance was 24-year-old George Bass. Also from Lincolnshire, he did not know Flinders until this voyage.
Flinders was bowled over by Bass. He was everything Flinders wanted to be.
Bass was a physically imposing man of six feet (183 cm), unlike Flinders who was half a foot (15.25 cm) shorter, with a slight build. He was a man of action who had come to the Colony with exploration very much in mind. He was also an intellectual who had brought with him a substantial library of books, reflecting wide interests. He spoke a number of European languages as well as Latin.
